PRESERVING CHARACTER
Working with a listed building requires a careful and considered approach. At Landmark Windows, we understand that windows and doors are often an important part of a property’s architectural history and that preserving their character is just as important as improving their performance.
With decades of experience in traditional timber joinery, we can manufacture, repair and upgrade bespoke windows and doors for historic properties while respecting the original design and detailing of the building.
LIKE-FOR-LIKE REPLACEMENT
Traditional windows are defined by their details. The proportions of the sashes, glazing bar profiles, mouldings, sash horns and frame construction all contribute to the appearance of the building.
Where existing windows are being replaced, we can carefully replicate these features to produce new timber windows that remain sympathetic to the original design.
Where required, we can work from the existing windows, architectural drawings or agreed specifications to reproduce details as accurately as possible.
GLAZING FOR LISTED
Glazing is often one of the most important considerations when upgrading windows within a listed property.
Where appropriate and permitted, we can offer a range of glazing solutions designed to improve performance while maintaining traditional sightlines.
This can include heritage slimline double glazing and specialist vacuum glazing, alongside options for acoustic, leaded, obscure and decorative glass.
Vacuum glazing can be particularly useful where extremely slim glazing construction is required, helping achieve improved thermal performance while retaining a more traditional appearance.
The suitability of any glazing specification will depend on the individual property and the requirements of the relevant conservation authority.
MATCHING THE DETAILS
The smallest details can make the biggest difference.
Our objective is to ensure new joinery complements the architecture of the building rather than appearing as an obvious modern replacement.
Existing windows can be carefully assessed so that important features including profiles, glazing bars, mouldings, horns and proportions can be replicated within the proposed design.
LISTED BUILDING CONSENT
Alterations to listed buildings can require Listed Building Consent, and replacing or significantly altering historic windows and doors should not be undertaken without establishing the relevant requirements.
Every listed property is different, and what is acceptable for one building may not be appropriate for another.
Landmark Windows can provide relevant product specifications and joinery information to support a proposed window or door specification; however, approval ultimately sits with the relevant local planning authority and conservation officer.
We always recommend establishing the required permissions before manufacturing replacement joinery.
