Preserving the character of a late-Victorian Highgate Home
Stanhope Gardens in Highgate N6 is characterised by substantial late-Victorian semi-detached houses, many built in red brick over three storeys and distinguished by prominent bay windows, varied rooflines and decorative architectural detailing. These individual features give the street its grand character and make the retention of original windows and joinery particularly important when properties are refurbished.
For this residential project on Stanhope Gardens, Highgate N6 5TT, Landmark Windows worked alongside both the client’s design partner and construction partner to deliver a carefully considered programme of timber window restoration, upgrading and replacement.
The project centred around two principal services: preserving and upgrading the original front elevation sash windows, while introducing completely new bespoke hardwood sash windows where required to the rear.
Why Landmark Windows?
For period properties, the correct solution is rarely simply to remove every existing window and start again.
Our approach begins by understanding the building.
We consider the condition of the original joinery, the architecture of the elevation, existing glazing-bar patterns, frame proportions, glazing requirements and the wider objectives of the renovation before recommending whether individual windows should be restored, upgraded or completely replaced.
That allows Landmark to combine several specialist services within the same property — as demonstrated at Stanhope Gardens.
Here, original frames were preserved where appropriate, new hardwood sashes were introduced where an upgrade provided the best solution, ornate detailing was replicated rather than removed, and completely new bespoke box sash windows was manufactured where the rear layout required it.
It is this project-by-project approach that enables us to retain the character of period homes while introducing the performance expected from modern timber windows.
